Top ten reasons Birmingham needs a dog park:

  1. Well socialized dogs make better and safer companions
  2. Provides a safe environment for dogs to exercise
  3. Exercised dogs make better neighbors
  4. Promotes responsible pet ownership
  5. Provides elderly and disabled dog owners an accessible place to exercise their canine companions
  6. Enables dogs to legally run off leash
  7. Provides a forum for people to exchange tips, training ideas and share experiences
  8. With their own space, dogs are less likely to be off leash in other areas of the park where they might disturb others
  9. Dogs help "break the ice" for shy people
  10. Promotes public health and safety through education on bite prevention, responsible pet ownership & more

Our Mission

Our mission is to establish a fenced-in, off-leash dog park where well-behaved canine companions can exercise and play in a clean, safe environment without endangering themselves or disturbing people, property or wildlife; to develop a beautiful, well-maintained space, open to all dog lovers and friends who are willing to uphold the park’s rules and restrictions; to view this park as a community project, designed to satisfy the needs of dog owners and non-dog owners alike.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is a dog park?

A: A dog park is a fenced in area where dogs can run, off-leash, safely. Used to exercise and socialize.

Q: How does a dog park work?

A: Dogs are allowed into the park by a double gated fence to ensure that off-leash dogs inside the park cannot run out. Once the first gate is securely closed, dog and owner may enter into the off-leash area through a second gate. The basic rules are as follows:
  • Dog park hours are from sunrise to sunset
  • Users assume the "at your own risk" policy, which coincides with all city park areas
  • Owners must dispose of waste properly in the designated on-site containers
  • Limit of 3 dogs per owner, per visit - each dog must have a leash and be leashed prior to entry
  • Aggressive dogs, female dogs in heat, and puppies less than 4 months old are not permitted
  • Owners must remain inside fence with their dogs at all times, keeping them in sight and voice control

About Us

We want you to enjoy parks where your dog can safely run, roll over and socialize with canine friends. Time spent in a dog park helps to satisfy your dog’s cravings for canine companionship, and lets them burn off extra energy by running and playing with other dogs off leash in a safe, contained area.

Bark for a Park is a tax-exempt 501(c)3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to open dog parks in the greater Birmingham area and to promote public health and safety through education.

We are currently working with the City of Birmingham and the Glen Iris community to open Birmingham’s premier dog park at George Ward Park.
Our first goal is to raise $40,000 to fence and prepare the 2.6 acres of land that will become Birmingham's first dog park. There are also other local communities waiting in the wings for our assistance. We are counting on your help. Check the Bark Events page to find out about our latest fundraiser, and the How You Can Help page to learn about other ways to pitch in.

We were founded by a group of dedicated volunteers who love their dogs and their community, and who want to be a part of launching Birmingham’s premier dog park.  Please join in this great effort.
